Knowing Where You Come From

History isn't particularly interesting for a lot of people, but for others, it holds a lot more meaning as long as it has something to do with who they are or what they care about. For us here at Center BMW, the history that matters is the history of our vehicle. In particular, there is a lot of uncertainty about the origins of our logo, since people have little idea about why, exactly, our insignia is circle-shaped and checked with white and sky blue.
Many people probably assume that we chose that shape and color way back in 1917 when we got this business venture underway because it looked pretty. After all, there are few things more visually pleasing than a circle, and when have you ever heard someone say, "Sky blue just isn't all that visually pleasing to me."?
But there's more to it than just good looks. BMW, short for Bayerische Motoren Werke (Bavarian Motor Works, in English), originally made airplanes during World War I, and there's a strong theory that the white-and-blue check is designed to imitate the look of a plane propeller spinning in front of a blue sky. Add that theory to the one that points out how the color scheme of the logo is exactly the same as the color scheme of the Bavarian flag, and we're really starting to get somewhere.
For those like us who sell BMW 1 Series, BMW 3 Series, and BMW 5 Series in Los Angeles, automotive history is more important than it is for others, but we like knowing where we come from and what we're all about. Who knew blue and white could have so much embedded meaning?
