BMW Tech Helps Olympic Swimmers

Everybody likes to swim during the summer months, but the kind of swimming we all do at the local pools are definitely a lot different from the kind of swimming we've all been watching Michael Phelps and Missy Franklin do the last couple of weeks at the Olympics.  That kind of swimming takes years and years of training to perfect, but thanks to a BMW technology on loan to the U.S. Olympic Swimming team, training might go a little easier by the time these athletes get to Rio de Janeiro four years from now.

Wait, what?  You got it.  BMW has offered up the same motion capture technology they use to test the BMW 3 Series and other cars to track how swimmers are swimming and making their turns.  This tech is able to track and record the exact movements of a swimmer's body, including their hips, wrists, shoulders, knees, ankles, and toes.  Coaches can then look at the data and pinpoint areas of weakness.  Once upon a time, swimmers had to go by feel and coaches had to go by sight through churning waters.  Now, things are a lot easier, and BMW is behind the change.

For BMW dealers in Los Angeles, this relationship between the parent company and U.S. Olympic Committee is excellent PR, but beyond that fact we're just excited to know that Franklin, for example, could get even better by 2016 because we had a hand in it.  Forget how it helps sales; this could help Olympic history, and that's why this partnership is so exciting.
