BMW Introduces Sleek i8 Spyder

The BMW i Series concepts, which debuted back in 2011, made a ton of headlines not only because the cars looked totally futuristic and awesome, but also because these i cars are going to completely revolutionize the BMW brand moving forward.  Both of them use electric components to stretch out fuel efficiency to ridiculous numbers, and the fact that they both look cool only makes them even more memorable.

Recently, we received word of a third vehicle in the i-team, the BMW i8 Spyder, and it maintains the great efficiency (which we'll get to in a minute) while also offering the sportiness and smooth looks of a convertible.  While only a concept, the i8 Spyder looks exactly like the kind of futuristic car you imagined as a kid we'd be seeing right about now, with maybe the lone exception that it doesn't hover through the air.  Other than that, though?  It would be right at home in "Back to the Future 2."

As for that fuel efficiency we mentioned earlier, BMW dealers in Los Angeles are going to love the fact that these gorgeous vehicles are capable of 78 MPGe while also pushing out 354 hp and 405 lb-ft of torque.  It's not often you see that kind of power combined with that kind of efficiency combined with those great looks.  A three-cylinder engine powers the rear wheels, while lithium-ion batteries power the front ones, and the system can run about 19 miles completely on electricity before gas is needed to start recharging the batteries.

It's not a production model, but we're getting closer to that.  If this thing ever does hit lots, though, we imagine they'll get snatched up pretty quickly.  That wouldn't surprise us one tiny bit.
