As an automaker, BMW has
the luxury of being known and desired for a number of reasons, only one of
which is styling. Fortunately, with the 2012 328i and 335i models hitting
dealerships like Center BMW soon, a catchy, athletic style is just the
beginning. From customization options to a lighter body, there's so much more
to love in your next BMW. The automaker has sacrificed nothing in terms of
efficiency, performance or safety, and the overall structure and capabilities
of the vehicle are designed to make driving easier than ever before. Not that
it's ever been difficult with a BMW.
To begin with one of the car's strongest points, we have to call out the distinctive styling of the 2012 BMW 328i and 2012 BMW 335i, which come in Sport, Luxury and Modern lines with unique interior and exterior color palettes in addition to the base model. But customization doesn't stop there because the M Sport package makes a return for BMW's biggest fans. A lower, non-adaptive M Sport suspension with anti-roll bars and 18-inch M Sport wheels mark the strongest offerings of the package.
However you decide to
customize, we're sure the revamped 3 series will impress, no matter where
you're headed. Longer by 3.7 inches with a wheelbase that is two inches longer
with wider front and rear tracks, the 328i is designed to be an easier drive
for motorists and passengers alike. Smooth handling becomes even smoother with
a vehicle that's 88 pounds lighter than its predecessor.
We couldn't keep the
hood down on this one, though. A turbocharged, four-cylinder engine powers this
beautiful machine and hits 240 horsepower with 260 lb-ft of torque. That means
it's capable of pushing the 328i from zero to 60 in 5.7 seconds. Rounding out
the high-performance capabilities of the 328i is the option between a six-speed
manual or eight-speed automatic transmission.
The BMW 335i stays a bit truer to the classic BMW setup with a turbocharged 3.0-liter, six-cylinder engine capable of producing 320 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque, shaving off a bit more time in the zero-to-60 race and clocking in at 5.4 seconds. What's more, an overboost option is able to push torque up to 370 lb-ft, and drivers can upgrade from a six-speed manual transmission to a seven-speed automated dual-clutch (DCT) manual, which is able to quicken the 335i's step even more. Final adjustments to powertrain options include an eight-speed automatic transmission or auto stop/start to preserve more fuel.
With so much careful
attention to every aspect of the 328i and 335i, it's no wonder that BMW has put
a proactive spin on safety, offering blind-spot detection, automatic high beams
and lane-departure warning. Optional parking assistance comes in the form of a
scanner that searches out available parallel spaces when drivers cruise below
22 miles per hour. Even more assistance comes into play as the car parks itself
with electric power steering. BMW offers a mechanical variable-ratio rack
alternative to electric steering system.
Safety features designed
to facilitate the driving experience continue with a Surround View camera that
displays the car's surrounding area and overhead space for maneuvering with
more safety and certainty. The Comfort Access option provides hands-free trunk
access. That is, drivers can wave their feet over a rear bumper sensor to open
the trunk.
